When a shamanic drummer meets a visual artist as inspired as he is inspiring, a grand master of the kora, and some of the most sought-after musicians and creators on the current scene, sparks are bound to fly.
Finding the right note, the perfect gesture, playing with sonic space, seeking silence in motion and sound, drawing a stroke of color on a black canvas — the five companions take us into a poetic world where music and drawing merge into a single, unified expression.
It’s been nearly fifteen years since Anne Paceo cast off. Ever since she set sail in 2008 with her album Triphase, the drummer has steered clear of academic conventions and artificial experimentation.
At the crossroads of jazz, pop, and world music, invited to perform on five continents, she shapes her own global musical tradition by layering landscapes. Anne Paceo’s music is as much a geographic as an inner journey — and in that, she resonates with Cyril Pedrosa, who explored his roots in Portugal, imagined dreamlike medieval landscapes in The Golden Age, and traversed seasons and souls in Equinoxes…
Through the ongoing dialogue between the two artists, the idea of an inner and space-time journey emerges. On screen, a constantly evolving landscape comes to life before the eyes of both audience and musicians, animated live by the illustrator.
Built around the deeply evocative theme of the island, the compositions and songs specially written by Anne Paceo speak more to the heart than to the mind.
Between land and sea, the music and drawings of Sur une île create a living painting “to find one’s place in the world and within oneself,” an open frame for interpretation and improvisation. Alongside her longtime collaborators Ablaye Cissoko, Leo Montana, and Sylvain Daniel, Sur une île brings together a unique ensemble serving an imaginary realm under construction — for the duration of a live illustrated concert, where textures unfold both in the ether and on screen.
