A major figure<\/strong> of today\u2019s music scene, a torchbearer of the new crossover jazz movement, France\u2019s most visible drummer, and a composer celebrated for her trance- and spirituality-infused musical vision\u2014Anne Paceo<\/strong> continually reinvents herself and surprises us. Her induction into the Order of the Chevaliers des Arts et des Lettres<\/em> in 2021, her accolades including 3 French Jazz Awards (Victoires de la Musique)<\/strong>, her extensive collaborations, and a rich discography\u20148 albums<\/strong> and 4 EPs<\/strong>\u2014all testify to her singular artistic path.<\/p>

Born in Niort on September 17, 1984, Anne spent her childhood’s first years in Daloa, Ivory Coast, where she grew up surrounded by the rhythms of local percussionists rehearsing near her home. She discovered the drums at age ten, and they became her refuge.<\/p>

In 2005, she became the first female drummer<\/strong> admitted to the jazz class at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur de Musique de Paris, studying there until 2009 with teachers such as Dr\u00e9 Pallemaerts and Riccardo Del Fra. She represented the Conservatory at the IAJE in New York and even played alongside the legendary Michel Legrand<\/strong>.<\/p>

First noticed as a sought-after accompanist, she recorded and performed from the age of twenty with great names in French and international music across genres\u2014jazz, pop, and world music\u2014with artists like Archie Shepp, Rhoda Scott, Christian Olivier (T\u00eates Raides), Rick Margitza, Marcel Azzola, Henri Texier, Alain Jean-Marie, Leyla McCalla, Philippe Catherine, Sandra Nkak\u00e9, Jeanne Added, Melissa Laveaux, China Moses, Christian Escoud\u00e9<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>

She released her first two albums\u2014Triphase<\/em> (2008) and Empreintes<\/em> (2010)\u2014on the Laborie label, quickly earning the Django d\u2019Or \u00ab\u00a0New Talent\u00a0\u00bb in 2009 and the Victoire de la Musique \u201cRevelation\u201d in 2011. The trio has since toured worldwide: Chile, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Morocco, Myanmar, Algeria, Taiwan, Cambodia…<\/p>

With 2012\u2019s Y\u00f4ka\u00ef<\/em>, a sonic travelogue in quintet\u2014and fully composed by her\u2014Anne asserted herself as a composer, drawing on animist Japanese mythology. \u00ab\u00a0Y\u00f4ka\u00ef is one of those radiant, hypnotic, and addictive works that leave you dreamy, with a frozen smile.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 FIP<\/strong><\/p>

In 2016, she released Circles<\/em>, an album marked by an organic, generous style blending jazz, pop, electronics, and world music. The ensemble played over 150 concerts globally, and she won her second Victoire de la Musique<\/strong> as \u00ab\u00a0Artist of the Year.\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0With Circles, Anne Paceo invites us on a journey where cosmic rock meets soulful prayer, where cold steel funk leads to strange extraterrestrial drifts…\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 Les Inrocks<\/strong><\/p>

From 2010 to 2017, Anne frequently worked in Myanmar through the Institut Fran\u00e7ais, immersing in local traditional music while teaching Western music. Falling in love with Burmese music, she created Fables of Shwedagon<\/em>, uniting a Burmese orchestra with European improvisers. The premiere took place in Rangoon\u2019s Mingalaba festival in 2016, and the live album was released in 2018. \u00ab\u00a0Rarely have two cultures coexisted so harmoniously; this music is anything but artificial \u2014 it perfectly embodies the idea of playing together.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 Jazz Magazine<\/strong><\/p>

Her later compositions include Bright Shadows<\/em> (2019): \u00ab\u00a0An album that is both demanding and accessible.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 Rolling Stone<\/strong>. Again named \u00ab\u00a0Artist of the Year\u00a0\u00bb, she became the only musician, woman or man, to receive this honor twice.<\/p>

In 2020, she released the Sam\u00e2<\/em> EP\u2014mixing live recordings from the Philharmonie de Paris with two studio extensions\u2014and joined the Montreux Jazz Academy as a mentor alongside John McLaughlin<\/strong> and Snarky Puppy<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 2021, she founded her own label, Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la Nuit<\/strong>, releasing Circles Live<\/em>\u2014her second EP\u2014and became Artist-in-Residence at Sc\u00e8ne Nationale Les G\u00e9meaux in Sceaux.<\/p>

Her track Sunshine<\/em> from Circles<\/em> was selected by Kurt Elling<\/strong> for his \u00ab\u00a0Apparition Bridge: Music of Contemporary European Composers\u00a0\u00bb tour, alongside works by Kenny Wheeler, Jan Garbarek, Joe Zawinul<\/strong>, and Michel Legrand<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 2022, she released her 7th album, S.H.A.M.A.N.E.S<\/em>, which topped the SNEP charts and stayed in the jazz charts for several weeks. The release party sold out at La Cigale<\/strong>, and the press was unanimous: Lib\u00e9ration, Le Monde<\/strong>, and T\u00e9l\u00e9rama<\/strong> featured portraits of her. \u00ab\u00a0Anne Paceo has established herself as one of the leading figures of French music.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 Lib\u00e9ration<\/strong><\/p>

That year, she also composed the original score for Sorci\u00e8res<\/em>, a theatrical adaptation of Mona Chollet\u2019s bestseller, staged at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l\u2019Atelier in Paris. She shared the stage with Anna Mouglalis, Clothilde Hesme, Val\u00e9rie Donzelli<\/strong>, and Jennifer Decker<\/strong> (Com\u00e9die-Fran\u00e7aise).<\/p>

In 2023, while touring Europe with S.H.A.M.A.N.E.S<\/em>, she created a cin\u00e9-concert for Nanouk l\u2019Esquimau<\/em> and a drawing-concert titled Sur une \u00eele<\/em> with visual artist Cyril Pedrosa<\/strong>. She also released two EPs: B\u2019sides<\/em> and S.H.A.M.A.N.E.S Remixes<\/em>.<\/p>

In 2024, she was selected as one of 50 residents at the Villa Albertine<\/strong> and traveled to New Orleans<\/strong> to work on voodoo and hoodoo cultures.<\/p>

That same year, she launched WIZZ<\/strong>, a female-only mentorship project supporting women instrumentalists in career development\u2014from rediscovering musical heritage to practice workshops, masterclasses, and professional networking. The project is supported by Les G\u00e9meaux<\/strong> and Jazz sous les Pommiers<\/strong>.<\/p>
